By bringing together this collection of 13 essays, Kong and O’Connor seek to focus the spotlight on CCIs in both Asian and European cities so that the “differences between varied experiences might be foregrounded and meaningful comparisons made” (p. 2). What comes across in this collection of essays is that government policy alone is not enough if a city is serious about establishing a thriving CCI. What is also equally important is an understanding of how different societies function and organise themselves via networks or clusters (as more commonly described) which can impact upon the way in which new ideas are developed, promoted and disseminated. There are two issues that need to be unpacked here. Firstly, can Asian cities hope to transform their CCIs by blindly adopting policies from Europe? And secondly, how do the different ways in which Asian and European cities function impact upon the development of CCIs? Professor Andy Pratt’s (King’s College London) essay attempts to answer the first question by offering a cautionary view on the current attempts by Asian cities to “Xerox” or directly replicate cultural policies from Europe (p. 10). He argues that not only is there an ”imprecision concerning the core concepts that underpin the CCI” within Europe, there is also an assumption that there is a “unitary European experience that Asian cities can draw upon” (pp. 9–10). Hence, he contends that the adoption of policies from Europe is not a “feasible prospect” for Asian cities (p. 19). For Pratt, much work with regards to CCIs still needs to be done within Europe and he advocates a “more systematic and rigorous evidence-based policy” within Europe as the current methods of simply applying a “science policy to culture and creative industries is not helpful” (p. 20). What can be gleaned from Pratt’s essay is that policy for CCI is closely intertwined with the economies and societies of each particular city or region and cannot simply be “imported” and implemented in a different country. Ted Tschang’s contribution, “Creative Industries Across Cultural Borders: The Case of Video Games in Asia”, highlights this notion. Tschang argues that CCIs in Asia have made a name for themselves through imitation rather than innovation, where a “general lack of a social process” has hindered the development of “creative individuals or workforces” (pp. 32). For Tschang, there are factors that are particular to Asia such as differing business strategies with an emphasis on “rent-seeking” rather than “innovation-seeking”, that has resulted in “imitative innovation trends in most Asian countries” which make implementation of policy from Europe problematic (pp. 38, 40). 56.8% topic match

It is a daunting task indeed to summarize the work of someone, who is always at least one step ahead of other scholars in regards to cutting edge research in the discipline of geography. In this case, Kong addresses the ways in which identity, educational space, and citizenship intersect at the global and national scales. In doing so she proposes a multi-scalar framework for exploring international schools, and the various school spaces*official, informal, physical*that create citizens who are socialized as national, transnational global, and local citizens. She focuses on the particular contributions that social and cultural geographers can make in examining the multiple identities that are shaped by the socialization processes of the educational system and the sometimes contentious religious and secular values and spaces in schools. Lily Kong serves as the Vice President of University and Global Relations as well as the Vice Provost of Academic Personnel at NUS. In reading a flyer announcing the ‘‘Inaugural NUS Women Leaders-Students Networking Event: Women Empower Women-Unleash Your Inner Potential,’’ which was held on March 26, 2013 with Lily Kong as the guest of honor, I was impressed not only by the descriptions of her academic and leadership contributions, but also by her willingness to serve the discipline of geography in a wide variety roles from this workshop for aspiring women leaders to numerous positions on scholarly journal editorial boards and national and international organizations. Culture-led urban regeneration has been instrumental in many European cities for recapturing investment, rejuvenating built environments and as a transformation mechanism for a transition towards a skills base more in tune with the knowledge economy (Landry et al. 1996; Gomez 1998; Miles 2005). This progressive change has been exemplified by visionary policies introduced by cities such as Glasgow, Seoul, Hong Kong, Singapore and Dubai, where the creative industries played a key strategic role. Following a review of the cultural regeneration policies and practices adopted in the United Kingdom (UK) and Singapore, with particular emphasis on the strategic role of the arts and culture, this study explores cultural regeneration practices in London and Singapore with particular emphasis on the balance between social and economic needs building on previous research by Kong (2000, 2009) and Miles (2005). The research findings show that although broad regeneration themes still hold true transnationally (e.g. cultural identity, place-branding, community engagement, industrial development, and economic stability), there are also differences, which should be considered. For instance, the gentrification of specific creative clusters took a different turn in Singapore, where practitioners sought to preserve certain pockets in this highly-urbanised city-state for their ambient settings and unique physical features. Similarly, Singapore's use of strategic city branding as part of its urban revitalisation policy remains in sharp contrast to the UK's urban regeneration approach, which accorded heavier emphasis on community participation and skills development. Finally, it is argued that Singapore could benefit from adopting a similar approach to that of the UK by developing social support mechanisms within current urban revitalisation policies that address growing social issues likely to affect Singapore as well as Southeast Asia in the 21st century. 0.2% topic match

We have added layers of data that go beyond Chinese Taoist, Buddhist, and popular god temples to also display the distributions of a wide range of other religious networks, including Christian churches, Islamic mosques, Hindu temples, and Theravadin, which are the Taiwanese, Japanese and Tibetan Buddhist monasteries found across the region. This digital platform covers a larger area than the Taiwan History and Culture in Time and Space (THCTS) historical GIS platform but is more regionally focused than the ECAI (Electronic Cultural Atlas Initiative) By incorporating Chinese inscriptions, extensive surveys of Chinese temples and associations, as well as archival and historical sources, this platform provides new materials and new perspectives on the Chinese diaspora in Southeast Asia. This paper: (1) outlines key research questions underlying these digital humanities platforms; (2) describes the overall architecture and the kinds of data included in the SHGIS and the SBDB; (3) reviews past research on historical GIS; and provides (4) a discussion of how incorporating Chinese epigraphy of Southeast Asia into these websites can help scholars trace networks across the entire region, potentially enabling comparative work on a wide range of religious networks in the region. His research interests focus on public management, comparative social policy, and labour and education policy in China and Hong Kong. Hence, we have witnessed a proliferation of education providers, a diversification of education financing, and an increase in private-public partnerships in education provision since the policy of educational decentralization was introduced in the mid-1980s. This article sets out to examine the politics of educational decentralization in this wider policy context by critically analysing the tensions between the central education ministry, conventional minban higher education institutions and the newly emerging state-endorsed independent minban colleges (second-tier colleges or independent colleges). It also reflects critically upon the policy implications for the evolving “governed market” in education, and analyses the challenges for the new regulatory regime now that the higher education sector has become highly diversified in post-Mao China. The Challenges of Globalization to State Capacity: The Search for New Governance Before the end of the Cold War, nation states were “perceived as the primary political communities with the capacity to determine the status and to make rules for any activity that fell within contemporary understandings of the scope of legitimate authority. States were sovereign and hence each state determined within itself the nature of its internal and external policies.” The revolutions of 1989 in Eastern Europe and their aftermath have led to growing concerns about the declining capacity of modern states in governance and rising scepticism, especially doubting the ability of the state in managing the challenges of globalization. Many observers believe that capital is becoming more mobile and has no national attachments; national politics and political choices are considered to have been sidelined by global market forces; and transnational corporations are perceived as the key players in defining not only economic but also social and political agendas. It is in this broader political and economic context that people have begun to find national-level governance ineffective in coping with challenges generated from globalizing economic and social processes. It is not surprising, therefore, that the geography of religion and belief systems is an important, emerging field of study. We commence this chapter with a definition of the field, particularly as it entails distinctions that arise out of the highly personal nature that religious belief is accorded in the academy and society at large. A limited review and summary of trends in the field over the past decade follows, building on Kong's (1990) and Sopher's (1967, 1981) overviews. Although North American geographers are emphasized here, research in the geography of religion is thoroughly entwined in terms of scholars' national origin, university training, and research perspectives, thus making distinctions in nationality difficult. Moreover, geographers who do not consider themselves to be geographers of religion and numerous non-geographers also make significant contributions to this field because their work clearly incorporates both religious and geographic components in their analysis and subject matter. We note that traditional empirical studies largely dominate the work published in the in this field is gaining ground, particularly via recent dissertations and presentations at AAG meetings. Additional comments about future challenges and opportunities conclude the chapter. The Focus of Study No universally accepted definition of religion exists, as illustrated by the hundreds already published and others continually being introduced (see e.g. a separate bibliographical category devoted annually to this definitional task in Social Compass: International Review of Sociology of Religion). Another indication that the term " religion " lacks a single, precise definition is the continual struggle, expressed repeatedly within the American judicial system, with questions about what are truly " religious " activities. Definitions vary in their emphasis on three contrasting perspectives: (1) a transcendental divinity; (2) an immanent spirituality that permeates all of life; and (3) an ethical philosophy. Even though a formal definition of religion is seldom stated by geographers, it appears from their writings that most accept a definition close to the following: Religion is a system of beliefs and practices that attempts to order life in terms of culturally perceived ultimate priorities. Drawing upon theories of Andy Green, Antonio Gramsci, Basil Bernstein, Bruce Curtis, and Michael Apple, Wong has a comparative study of the relationships between hegemonies, state formations, and Chinese schools in post-war Singapore and Hong Kong. It is outstanding because Wong not only creatively employs state theories to “uncover some of the truly major dynamics that determine the politics of education and that lead to social and cultural transformation” (Apple, Preface, p. vii), but also incorporates Bernstein’s theory of the pedagogic device as an analytical framework to unpack “the social grammar of the medium producing, reproducing and transforming consciousness in schools” (p. 34). Wong starts with a critical review of the tradition of critical education research (Chapters 1–2) from which he develops his own theoretical position and describes his analytic framework, before moving on to examine in detail “State Formation in Singapore” (Chapter 3), “State Formation in Hong Kong” (Chapter 4), “State FormationandChineseSchool Identity” (Chapter 5), and “Denationalizing the Chinese School Curriculum in Hong Kong” (Chapter 6). He concludes by summarising his findings and highlighting his theoretical contributions to the field (Chapter 7). To limit his scope of the review, he mainly discusses the works of two influential scholars: Bruce Curtis and Andy Green.While recognising their great contributions to the field and tohis own theoretical framework, he concludes that like many other critical scholars, they “treat education as only a dependent variable affected by political transformation and fail to depict a more reciprocal and dialectical relationship between them” (p. 23). He also points out that their theories “suffer from the lack of comparative perspective” and therefore they contribute little to cross-societal variation in studies of relationships between state formation and education (p. 3). An outgrowth of plenary sessions in the Royal Geographical Society-IBG Annual Conference, London 2003, this book is an important contribution to the study of globalization and urbanization in Chinese cities. Unlike previous economic analysis which concentrates on foreign direct investment, papers here explore wider political, social and cultural changes and seek to demonstrate that globalization is built up from the local. Fifteen interesting papers are organized into 4 sections, each of which addresses a specific aspect of globalization. In the introductory chapter, Fulong Wu lays down a framework to articulate globalization and urbanization and analyze their relationship in the Chinese context. He suggests that urbanization, a material form of globalization, is a diversified process which stems from different local processes. Globalization, thus, is a bottom-up process which is distinct from Westernization. Discussions in Part I are concentrated on the reach of globalization. Investigating China's border cities, Xiangming Chen highlights the uneven impact of globalization and re-evaluates global-local ties (Chapter 2). He suggests that the distinctive location of trans-border cities has brought them under the joint influences of the local and the global. Cecile Batisse, JeanFrancois Brun and Mary-Francoise Renard examine the impact of foreign direct investment and international trade on China's urbanization (Chapter 3). Their econometric evidence suggests that the former has positive effects on the urban population whilst the impact of the latter is limited to coastal cities. The five papers in Part II investigate the ways in which particular cities have globalized themselves. Ian Cook (Chapter 4) and Hsiao-hung Nancy Chen (Chapter 7) give detailed accounts of the factors that contributed respectively to Beijing's and Taipei's internationalization process. These include the availability of first-class infrastructure, sophisticated technology and human capital as well as cultural and historical heritage. The impact of the Olympics on Beijing is also highlighted. Focusing on the experience of Hong Kong, Wemer Breitung and Mark Gunter discuss both the factors for global city formation and the subsequent local and social changes (Chapter 5). They examine the political factors that contributed to Hong Kong's development as a global city. Employing a historical approach, Philippe Foret examines the development of Macau between 1910 and 1930 (Chapter 6), and suggests that development during this period has laid down the basis for the city's tourism industry. Whether this is an attempt to bolster a national and/or cultural identity against the perceived forces of ‘western cultural imperialism’ or as another potential route for further economic growth, what is clear is that Asia, as a whole, is beginning to make its mark on the global cultural landscape. In the past 10 years, there have been large-scale investments in cultural infrastructure from Esplanade – Theatres on the Bay in Singapore to the West Kowloon Cultural District in Hong Kong as well as the hosting of prominent events such as the Shanghai Exposition in China. Artists from the region have seen their profiles raised with Ai Weiwei’s commission at the Tate Modern in London to Japanese film The Departures being awarded an Academy Award for Best Foreign Film. This list is by no means exhaustive but serves to illustrate growing government support and global public recognition of the creation and presentation of arts and culture within Asia today. It is with these changes in mind that this special issue was conceived. It seeks to provide a critical review of the rationales, functions and implications of cultural policy in Asia. By situating this examination within Asia’s specific, historical, cultural and social context, the edition seeks to shed light on the structures, values and process of cultural policy in Asia. At the broadest level, cultural policy operates differently within Asia due to the following key issues. Firstly, widespread colonisation within the region and the subsequent struggles for independence have left many Asian nations with entrenched political and cultural legacies. How have these legacies impacted upon the way cultural policy is created and managed today? Secondly, there is a notion, predicated on the success of the so-called ‘Asian Tiger’ economies that Asia possesses a distinctive set of ‘Asian’ values which heavily influences its government policies. What are these values and do they influence the type of arts and culture that is being supported? Finally, the different systems of government that exist within Asia itself often lead to key difference in how government policies are effected and implemented. Yet, the uncritical adoption of current policy initiatives in many countries in Asia from the UK and the US cultural policies fail to take into account these differences. Buttimer Annals of the Association of American Geographers 2006 - 36 citations - Show abstract - Cite Abstract: Several decades ago at an AAG session on cultural geography, Eric Isaac ended his exposition on the geography of religion with a gesture, "Here I am, ready for inquisition!" Fully clad as a Dominican nun, and quite unaware of the irony of the situation, I raised my hand to start the discussion, much to the amusement of the other participants. I am happy to notice that some of the questions raised at that session are still on the agenda in the early twenty-first century and I welcome the opportunity to reflect on progress since the 1960s. In those days the geography of religion involved primarily the study of global patterns of world religions, their spatial diffusion, boundaries, and imprints on the cultural landscape (Sopher 1960; Wagner & Mikesell 1962). There was research, too, on ways in which religion dictated certain taboos with respect to livelihood and food and influenced political and economic life. The dominant methods bore the stamp of the so-called spatial tradition, which had by then assumed pride of place with American geographers. I had at least two misgivings about this situation. First, as an enthusiast of la geographie humaine, I found this spatial approach quite opaque, glossing over tensions between believers and observers, between faith communities and politically exploited denominationalism, ignoring issues of reflexivity and the taken-for-granted values of the observer (Deffontainnes 1948; Sorre 1961; Teilhard de Chardin 1961; Buttimer 1971). Second, what fascinated me most was the role of geography-the biophysical world, its seasonal rhythms of climate, wildlife, and livelihood-in shaping religious sensitivities and practices, liturgies, and ways of life for most faith communities in the world. The foregoing articles in this section scarcely satisfy my second concern but they do address the first along two major, and intimately intertwined, axes of enquiry: ontological, what is religion? and epistemological, what can be known, or how might one analyze it? All four articles involve both axes of concern, those by Ferber and Holloway engaging in ontological issues, those by Proctor and Ivakhiv preferring epistemological realms of discourse. One could find here the age-old tension between realism and nominalism, with a distinct preference for the latter and a general tendency toward deontologizing the discourse on religion. Throughout these articles there does seem to be a general acceptance of Jonathan Smith's (1998, 282) characterization of religion as a "second-order generic concept, useful in establishing a disciplinary horizon." Similarly, for section editor James Proctor, an appropriate definition of religion is one that enables a desired form of inquiry, and he offers results from a factor-analytical rendering of data derived from a questionnaire survey of Americans. For Adrian Ivakhiv, the same definition of religion allows for a rich commentary on the myriad ways in which, for example, landscapes become sacred destinations for pilgrims. Julian Holloway's article shows fascination about the orchestration of diverse agencies in the construction of sacred space and time, but also suggests that there is no fixed or predetermined order or being to the sacred. Michael Ferber accepts religion as a given reality, perhaps viewed differently by believers and observers, perhaps subject to manipulation via poetics or politics, but potentially salient in elucidating debates over structure and agency. This work by Dr Cheng Lim-Keak whose preoccupation is with human geography is, therefore, most welcome. In his own words, "Most of these (former) studies ... are concerned with history and limited studies have been made on the social geography of the Chinese community in Singapore. The present study represents an attempt to fill this gap" (p. xv). Throughout, the presentation is aided by many figures, tables and maps showing that it is based on an examination of a considerable amount of quantitative data. The spatial dimension introduced by the maps is particularly worth-mentioning. Dr Cheng's work can be divided into two parts. In the first part, the author gives a very detailed discussion on the emergence and development of a bang society. Factors like the British colonial policy of divide and indirect rule, the existing dialectal difference within the Chinese community, and the parochial social and cultural tradition brought along by the emigrants from Fujian and Guangdong are carefully examined. All these were conducive to the growth of a parochial mentality which was most explicitly expressed in the formation of huiguan and other dialect-based or regional Chinese associations. The latter, in turn, provided the institutional and structural backbone for such social pattern. Of similar importance are the dialect groups' specialization in economic activities and the accompanying geographical segmentation that constitute the substructure of the society at large. The author is apparently very concerned about the socio-economic forces on the scene. The second part focuses on the notion of change. There is a painstaking description of three major agents of change that swept across Singapore after 1959, namely, cultural pluralism, community development and the remarkable economic growth. This is followed by an analysis of their possible impact on the Chinese society. In particular, it has been widely theorized that globalization and urban restructuring have seen the emergence of a new mode of “entrepreneurial” governance where the primary task of city oYcials is, in essence, “to lure highly mobile and exible production, nancial and consumption ows into its space” (Harvey, 1989a:11). Within the entrepreneurial regime, “publicprivate partnerships” have often been deployed as a key strategy in urban regeneration programmes, most dramatically seen in the construction of prestigious urban “ agship projects” or “mega-projects” such as spectacular waterfront cities, world-class convention centres, cultural centres and other mixed-use commercial developments (see Smyth, 1994; Olds, 1995). Often associated with this “new entrepreneurialism” is the emergence of a “new urban politics” (Cox, 1993; Judd and Kantor, 1998) which challenges the redistributive consequences of entrepreneurial policies. In particular, (global) private capital is seen to play an increasingly dominant role in the shaping of urban development, while the local state is being reduced to a subordinate and disadvantaged position. In extreme cases, this has led to the “weakening” and the eventual “capturing” of the state (Logan and Molotch, 1987; T. Hall and Hubbard, 1996). To the extent that urban entrepreneurialism is characterized by the preoccupation of city oYcials with the promotion of economic growth, Singapore arguably epitomizes the “entrepreneurial city”. The relentless drive to establish the city-state as an economic powerhouse is demonstrated by the eVorts of state agencies such as the Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA), Economic and Development Board (EDB) and the Singapore Tourism Board (STB) to promote and attract high-growth investments, nancial services and value-added services into the city-state. Ongoing land reclamation projects have increased Singapore's land area by 23% in just over half a century. This is architecturally most evident within the central urban core which encompasses both the old and new business districts. The first reclamation project in 1822 historically took place under the colonial administration, and the current financial heart to the south of the island is built on where there was once only water. This new site is fuelled by conspicuous consumption made possible by a burgeoning economy, but most of all, is part of an imperative to cultivate an emerging national image which balances a colonial legacy and aspirations towards cutting-edge culture. To begin, the city’s old colonial architectural legacy is reclaimed through reinvention and reappropriation. The other strategy sees the introduction of unexpected programmatic spaces, landscapes, scales and ideologies which respond to the fluid and uncertain socioeconomic and cultural conditions of a nation-city-state. More importantly, the interventions interrogate issues of power, stakeholdership, sociocultural transformation and economic resilience in responding to an evolving demographic, a maturing civil society and uncertain geopolitical challenges. The architectural proposals elude the island’s limits by anticipating, exceeding and overachieving. Referencing the first millennium where land was reclaimed along the coast, Singapore Pte. The latest indications seem to point to a general consensus that the arts can make a valuable contribution to a city’s re-invention. One only has to look at the number of cities aspiring to become the next European Capital of Culture or the various incarnations of these competitions: the latest being represented by the UK City of Culture competition. Louise C. Johnson’s book Cultural Capitals Revaluing the Arts, Remaking Urban Spaces is a study that highlights the positive aspects of this trend, where she provides an “optimistic assessment” on how the arts can (1) activate individuals (as in the case of the formation of community arts groups campaigning for greater representation in cultural initiatives), (2) rebuild communities, (3) enliven the polity, (4) aid the physical regeneration of derelict spaces and (5) re-orient economies (p. 3). Johnson argues that while the arts agenda has increasingly become instrumental by addressing economic and social issues, this very same instrumentalism has also allowed the arts to “embrace individual quests for expression of self or place, personal or social healing, community building and urban imagining” (p. 239). Johnson is primarily interested in what she describes as “second order cities”, which she defines as cities that have experienced economic and/or social decline and are now looking towards the arts to boost their economies and transform their societies. Her book provides case studies of her four chosen cities of Glasgow, Bilbao, Singapore and Geelong, the second city of Victoria, Australia. She provides a historical background on each city and highlights how these cities are using the arts to transform themselves through the adoption of various types of cultural strategies. Through her investigation, Johnson is also interested in exploring the “social, cultural, political and economic sustainability” (p. 7) of these cities via their arts and cultural initiatives. Here she draws upon ideas offered by David Throsby and states that an arts agenda that is sustainable should ensure an equal distribution of economic and social benefits as well as limit any adverse impact on a city’s landscape or resources. At the end of each chapter, and in the conclusion, Johnson offers her opinion on the long-term sustainability on each city’s quest to become a Capital of Culture. Johnson’s book is clearly written and she has done extensive research, both primary and secondary, on the cities looked at in the book. In particular, her attention to the historical formation of the cities in her case study chapters provide a useful way of understanding how and why each city has adopted its own particular approach in its cultural strategy. As Johnson points out, although all her selected cities have experienced the effects of colonialism, each city has chosen to deal with the impacts of their colonial history in different ways. For example, one of the key impacts of Singapore’s colonial past was the formation of distinct cultural quarters such as Chinatown and Little India within Singapore’s urban landscape. A key cultural initiative now is the conservation and redevelopment of these quarters to preserve the city’s cultural heritage and serve the growing tourist market. There is a feeling of debate and real energy through this interaction. This energy is sustained formally by a lively mix of presentation genres, ranging from academic essay to photographic essay to diary-style entries and proceedings of workshop discussions. The form and content of both the books, then, belie the overarching theory by which they are housed. The earlier book, Asian Ethical Urbanism, is more academic in tone. It consists of two parts: the first presents a number of theoretically oriented reflections; the second presents more case-oriented material. Here, Koh Wan Ching’s study of central Hong Kong and Kevin Lim on Bangkok offer useful sketches. Lim’s discussion of the conservation zone of colonial Hanoi is a good contribution to a relatively under-examined part of Southeast Asia. He thoughtfully discusses the relationship of the French colonial reconstruction of the ancient fabric of Hanoi, and the place of the so-called ‘‘Ancient Quarter’’ in the nationalist period of Vietnam’s recent history. Current issues in the city relate to handling cultural tourism, infrastructure such as water, electricity, sewage and drainage and how this might be retrofitted into the fabric of the city. Lim also considers gentrification, and sustaining authentic urban cultural life through the exposure to new forms of global tourism. ‘‘Architecture and Identity in Singapore’’ presents a detailed account of the regionalist strands of architecture on the island-state, followed by a number of contemporary projects that demonstrate the vigor of local architectural culture there. The later book, Asian Alterity, builds on what Lim calls ‘‘five ethical instruments’’ that have particular relevance for Asia: conservation and memories, safeguarding the commons, spaces of indeterminacy, land policy, and spatial justice. To these Lim adds further reflections on transportation, infrastructure, and urban poverty. Again, while these general headings are suggestive, it is when Lim turns to specific urban situations that he energizes his material. In this respect, engaging accounts are offered of the recent developments of the Bund in Shanghai, the interaction of pedestrian systems at the Yan’an Elevated Expressway in Shanghai, the 6 km-long restored Cheonggyecheon stream and public park in Seoul, and the Sukhumvit Sky Train Junction in Bangkok. A second Part of Asian Alterity includes a series of short case studies on individual Asian cities. There are excellent reflections on the architectural culture in Tokyo, Melbourne and Hong Kong. But also noteworthy are studies on Ho Chi Minh City by Tran Khang, and on Bangkok by Kanika R’kul. While both of these studies deal with relatively underdiscussed Asian cities, their importance in the collection is not merely to flesh out our knowledge of lesser-known urban centers. These chapters focus on cities that, in the world city system, if they register at all, occupy ‘‘lower tier’’ positions. Yet Ho Chi Minh City and Bangkok are shown to be grappling with urban agendas—supporting cultural tourism, juggling development pressures and demands of urban heritage, attracting direct foreign investment, providing mass transit infrastructures, etc.—that would be recognizable to urban planners in any of the world cities of the ‘‘first tier.’’ Bangkok and Ho Chi Minh City, furthermore, appear as open to, and engaged with, the global circuits of capital, culture, and technology as Tokyo or Singapore. Cities of the Global South—Lagos, Nairobi, Addis Ababa, Sao Paulo, Mumbai, Jakarta, Manila—have been increasingly deployed in contemporary debate in architecture and urbanism as limit cases for conventional urbanism and planning. In a broader urban studies framework, cities such as these are seen to challenge the hierarchies of the world city system too. Majority of the innovative projects are initiated by the government agencies. For this paper, I would like to highlight the two distinct themes of innovation that, I believe preoccupied the authority for its urban issues, they are innovation which concern nature and culture. Land in Singapore is scarce. Natural resources are strictly protected. At the same time they are challenged to return the maximum benefit to their own population. The water catchment area and the prime forest on the whole island is the most valuable natural resources to be preserved. The paper will demonstrate how Singapore challenges with its own resources (water and greenery) in which the holistic planning around these themes become more than just spaces of protection but integrated with the public space system and turned into more valuable spaces for the well being of its population. The second theme is the issue related to culture. Singapore's economy is the most advance compare to other Southeast Asian countries, however when it comes to culture and identity, the city state struggles with the over constructed image of branding Singapore's culture. The paper will discuss several examples around the theme of arts and culture, how the city state bench-mark itself with the world class cities. It is one of the most challenging topic in urban planning and policy making. It is worth discussing on its success and failure. We can learn form Singapore that innovation at the level of policy maker can be achieved in some urban aspects such as the management of natural resources and urban design projects related to it. However when it comes to the issue related to art and culture, the top down policy alone cannot assure the achievement of city's identity as it aspired. Tracing the historical development of the environmental and cultural policies of Singapore the paper intends to study and analyze various case studies reflecting these attempts of natural and cultural instillation. In the process of comparison of these two drastically contrasting actors and approaches, the paper will argue that it has mostly been driven by economic aims, and careful thought. The results have been limited and restrictive. Further arguing that 'creativity' is the essential factor of arts and culture, it evaluates the authenticity and the ultimate implications on cultural spirit. 0.0% topic match

Amsterdam University Press published in the series Cities and Cultures a vibrant collection of works, which come from a workshop at the Amsterdam School for Cultural Analysis (ASCA) and at the International Institute for Asian Studies (IIAS). Entitled Spectacle and the City: Chinese Urbanities in Art and Popular Culture, this collection offers an inter-disciplinary look at this particular phenomenon from the perspective of art and popular culture. The fascinating assumption surrounding the book is the connection between the experience of the cities and the imagination about the cities (p. 12). Thus the book addresses how imaginations affect people's experience of Chinese urbanities, by delving into the ways in which art and popular culture depict recent urban changes. The heterogeneous group of authors provides the reader with the possibility of exploring the theme from different angles. It is interesting to note that the collection does not limit its focus on Mainland China, but rather it also includes cities like Singapore, Hong Kong, and Taipei.The idea of city-as-spectacle is presented in the title as a key element encompassing the contributions. However, the definition of spectacle rooted in Guy Debord's account does not play the same fundamental role in all chapters. In the introduction the editors, Jeroen de Kloet and Lena Sheen, try to elucidate and unify the theoretical underpinnings of the contributions (pp. 13-15). Debord's connection between art and everyday life is supplemented by Bruno Latour's Actor-Network Theory from which the book retrieves the idea that non-human actors, such as images, hold their own agency. The concept of "haptic machine," which stems from Gilles Deleuze and Felix Guattari, is also mentioned to frame the city as a particular machine (p. 15). In addition, the introduction traces a more intriguing clarification about the interdisciplinary outlook of the book. By addressing the "production of place", the ambitious goal of the collection is to "align" urban studies and cultural studies with area studies (pp. 15-16). The specific reason for this stimulating alignment is to move beyond a rigid definition of urbanisation rooted in the claim for universalism and modernity. Hence the cities are interpreted "as manifestations of alternative, or partially overlapping, modernities" related to both local and global pressures (p. 16).The thirteen chapters of the collection compose a dynamic path of exploration among different representations of Chinese urbanities. The first chapter focuses on speed and space. The author, Ackbar Addas, stresses the fact that media like architecture and cinema "perform" space, rather than represent it, by shaping a "spatial history" (p. 22). The Beijing Olympics Opening Ceremony directed by Zhang Yimou and the film Still Life by Jia Zhangke are taken into account as two clarifying examples of distinct ways of performing spaces. In the second chapter, Chua Beng Huat critically examines a specific effect of the Singaporean process of aestheticisation in art: the condition of sex workers is covered by the way in which some artists frame the red light district of Singapore, since they depict it as a critique of the lifestyle of the middle class. The author of the following chapter, Robin Visser, considers two different artworks, a novel by Yu Hua (Brothers) and a virtual artwork by Cao Fei (RMB City). This contribution, by delving into Debord's notion of spectacle with reference to the city, uncovers the fact that resistances can take place only if the spectacle does not completely control social spaces (pp. 57-58). In interpreting the Erligang expansion, however, Wang proposes that ideological motives could have played a major role too. However, it remains to be explored how such ideological motives may have been integrated with other economic or military motives, and why ritual bronze vessels should have played such a symbolic or representative role in this expansion process. In the eyes of many of the authors of this volume, the Erligang civilization deserves much more credit for its immense contribution to characteristics of early Chinese civilization, such as the bronze industry as well as the Chinese writing system. While the earliest appearance of the writing system in China is still an issue of debate, to credit Erligang foundries as “the starting point for the development of factory organization in China” could be somewhat misleading, as archaeological discoveries from the even earlier Erlitou site give clear evidence for the emergence of a bronze industry based on piece-mould casting technology. While the unique significance of the Erligang civilization receives full recognition here, the continuity or connection in the development of bronze technology from Erlitou to Erligang should not be overlooked. Yung-ti Li’s chapter “The politics of maps, pottery, and archaeology” is worthy of special attention, as it specifically questions many practices in current archaeological research in China, such as drawing the cultural and political boundaries of the late Shang dynasty based on the distribution of archaeological remains. While Li’s acute and stimulating discussions of hidden assumptions in Chinese Bronze Age archaeology are fully appreciated, I wonder whether the heavily criticized dynastic model might better be seen as one alternative interpretation of archaeological discoveries in China, rather than being regarded as a totally distorted one which should be abandoned completely. 0.0% topic match

The government of the People's Action Party, which has enjoyed uninterrupted rule, dispersed the population of the overcrowded central-town district to peripheral "new towns," which were built on land appropriated from old village communities. Through education, land reclamation, military conscription, and public housing, the government created a disciplined industrial workforce (now housed in flats built by the Housing Development Board, or HDB, and linked to factories and offices via highways) along Fordist lines, thus engineering tremendous changes in the human landscape of Singapore (Barr and Skrbis 2008; Chua 1997; Dobbs 2003; Loh 2007; Wee 2007). This massive control over space defined the postcolonial history of Singapore, whose modernity depended as much on facilitating motion as on preventing it (Netz 2004, xii).Although historians have delineated the relationship between authoritarian rule, economic development, and social engineering in Singapore, they have been slow in integrating the work of geographers, who have addressed how landscapes, both material and immaterial, serve as cultural representations and social channels that foster and maintain the state ideologies of human progress and nation building. The government redeveloped the city center-now marked by skyscrapers and the reconstructed "racial enclaves" of Chinatown, Kampong Glam, and Little India-to showcase Singapore's global connectedness and historical legacies. It developed Marina Promenade and the banks of the Singapore River into a tourist attraction and up-market residential zone that appealed to expatriate executives and foreign visitors. It also created new art spaces such as the Esplanade (home to Theatres on the Bay) and renovated colonial landmarks and dilapidated shophouses to present Singapore as a vibrant arts and cultural hub worthy of admiration at home and abroad (Kong and Yeoh 2003; Chang et al. 2013; Ho et al. 2014).In recent years, historians began to recognize the impact of the natural environment, and attempts to reconfigure it, on the economic, political, and social history of Singapore. They have established that the British colonial authorities and the postcolonial People's Action Party government were interested not only in demolishing outdated structures and flattening the landscape but also in conserving heritage and preserving monuments and parks (including the Botanical Gardens, a new addition to UNESCO's heritage sites as a "cultural landscape") to promote scientific research, urban redevelopment, and the construction of a modern national identity (Barnard 2014; Blackburn and Tan 2015). Educated in English-language universities, Singapore's leaders understood that modernization and national success emerged from urban industrial growth, as in the American and European historical experiences. To maintain economic and political legitimacy, they would need to succeed by these terms (Kwak 2008, 87-88).Nevertheless, historians studying Singapore's past have not picked up on animal geographies, which not only inquire into relationships between nature and society and how nature shapes human cultural practices, but also define animals as "central agents in the constitution of space and place, and all that entails" (Wolch and Emel 1998, xiii). The "power of geography" is unleashed when space constitutes, constrains, and mediates social relations. As Lily Kong and Brenda S. A. Yeoh elaborate, the power relations that define and contest the specificities of the Singaporean nation are negotiated through "elements of the cultural landscape, including the landscapes and practices of everyday life" (2003, 15).
